White House Reveals Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to disclose details on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
