Cyclone the storm is forecast to strengthen into a uncommon highest-level hurricane as it veers in the direction of the Caribbean island, delivering dangerous flash flooding and landslides.

This weather system, which had wind speeds of up to 120 mph as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering northwest in the Caribbean and is expected to reach land by Tuesday, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Warnings of power cuts and disruption to utilities have been announced as this storm brings up to 30 inches of rain and sea level surges as high as 13ft above ground. "Take cover without delay," residents have been told.

Locals are being instructed to fortify their houses with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to stock up on basic necessities.

Alerts are also in effect for regions of the neighboring country including the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, where the hurricane is anticipated to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Landslides already being caused by the hurricane have already killed two in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Expected Trajectory

Melissa is predicted to cross Cuba by midweek before passing across the Greater Antilles and emerging into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the time it makes contact with the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have weakened to a Category 3 cyclone.
