A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
