An Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Supported Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Because my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had booked a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I should apply for a role with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that night. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but right away told my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the courage or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
